Description
This volcano has a great number of archaeological histories, being found 9 rooms in 5,680mts of altitude, ceramics, pycas complex (wall of stones) in the 5,315mts of altitude and a farm of 53 structures in its base to the 4,500mts.
Chiliques is the main mountain of the group of sacred hills of Socaire, a village located 100 kilometers south of San Pedro de Atacama, it´s the source of water and the channel for the sustain of the people of Socaire. No volcanic activity has been recorded so far, however, on January 2002 an infrared image obtained by the NASA revealed certain HOT SPOTS in an area near to the crater.
The top has two lagoons with an incredible view of the entire basin of the Salar de Atacama. The route to the Chiliques base is 110 kilometers (2 hours) southeast of San Pedro de Atacama, the road crosses the beautiful Laguna Legia located at 4,300 meters above sea level and depending on the time of year you can see the James Flamingos (Flamingos) birds.
The mountain will be climbed by the west face, the walk begins at 4,500 meters above sea level by a friendly and highly inclined path to reach the 5,000 meters, where the surface abruptly changes and begins a 45º degree incline between large and loose stones. This kind of terrain will accompany us until the north crater, from where we must contour the top to reach the highest point of the west side.
Chiliques is a mountain where you need acclimatization and excellent physical condition, the ascent takes 5 to 6 hours and requires experience in hiking on steep terrain.
